For those that know Jayso and have been following Ghana music, Jayso is
a top producer, song writer, rapper and singer, to sum it all up, Jayso
is a beast when it comes to music making in Ghana. He has been
responsible for the success of many acts like EL, Lil’ Shaker, Ball J,
Sarkodie, Itz Tiffany, Chase, Adina and more but what baffles everyone
is why he himself has not been at the peak of his career like those he
groomed. I guess he can explain better as he has done it below. He took
to his Facebook page to write the following.
I used to make music for these reasons; the money, power, respect
& fame. Lately, I don’t. It changed the day a young lady rapped all 3
verses to my song [This Is How ?#?OhMy?] & titled me her biggest
inspiration.
Apart from being a non-swearing emcee, I decided a long time ago to
make music with meaning, music that can inspire people, that feel good
music. My own path.
I’ve dealt with friends/people telling me “how to make it” by doing
certain records, looking/dressing a certain type of way, making certain
moves, you know, doing whatever it takes to “make it”. But my question
is “what is making it?”. What does it mean to you? To some people it’s
the acquisition of money, power, respect & putting all ‘doubters’ to
shame. To me though, “making it” means “touching a life” with my music,
with my life. My reason is simple. I didn’t get to this point following
a cliché.
Tasha is a student & an aspiring rapper. A young lady who’s
inspired by what I create. I didn’t know of her existence when I was
writing “This Is How”. Now I do. Now I consider her when making music. I
consider all the Tashas [Loyal Fans] in my life. The young boy
somewhere in Australia who calls me his role model. Elikplim, who thinks
I am all that & a bag of Kelewele.
“Jayso, you mean you don’t want money?”
Of course I do. I need money. Infact mi p3 Sika roff. But to sell
myself short, or do what isn’t me in order to make it? No thank you.
Hunger seems to be the reason why people do whatever it takes. Reason I
decide to eat first. I am eating so I can comfortably make whatever I
believe in (sow a seed) and sit tight for the fruits. That said, dear
upcoming musician, eat first. I know all about branding and treating
yourself like a product & doing what you have to do to make it.
Problem is, a bottle of fanta doesn’t have feelings. People do. What’s
the point? rocking all the fly gear for show but broke at home? Again,
dear upcoming musician, if you don’t have it, don’t try too hard. Be
yourself. When you earn it eventually, feel free to let the world see
the fruits of your labour. That one fine pass anything.
I’ve come this far doing what I do & remaining consistent.
“I mean why stop when I’m on the rise yo, 46,000+ followers on
twitter, no albums, just little rhymes I deliver got me here so, why I
go give up?”
Maybe my music will never reach all 4 corners of the earth, maybe I
won’t be as big as another emcee but I know a few things for a fact; I
will continue to do me. I will continue to push for good music, I will
continue working hard & put God first. At this point in my life,
MAKING TASHA PROUD is all that matters … to me. Medaase.
